Professional diagnostics of a wall-mounted air conditioner

Water leaking indoors

Air conditioner leaking water — causes and safe action

If water drips or runs from the indoor unit, switch it off and protect furniture, finishes and electrical equipment. Blocked drainage, an unsuitable fall, a failed connection, icing or another technical issue can cause leakage, so the actual source should be diagnosed.

A considered solution

The visible drip is not always the source

Water may appear at the edge of the unit, beneath trunking or within a wall even though the fault began elsewhere in the drain route. Before repair, we establish how condensate should leave and where that path is restricted.

What we assess

  • Assessment of where and when water appears
  • Inspection of filters, evaporator and drain tray
  • Review of the drain pipe and fall
  • Assessment of icing and operating faults
  • Agreed repair followed by drainage checks

Important before work

What we consider when preparing the solution

The exact scope depends on the property, equipment and installation conditions.

01

Near electricity

If water reaches cables, sockets or electronics, switch the equipment off and do not restart it before inspection.

02

Concealed drainage

A pipe hidden behind finishes can be more difficult to inspect and repair than an accessible route.

03

Recurring leakage

If leakage returns after cleaning, the fall, connections, pump, icing or another technical cause must be assessed.

Condensate formation

Water during cooling is normal; leakage indoors is not

Cooling causes moisture to condense on the cold evaporator. In a correctly operating system, it collects in a tray and leaves through the drain pipe. Dripping indoors means this path is obstructed or water is forming where it should not.

Leak intensity can change with humidity and operating time. Water appearing only on very hot days is not harmless; the higher condensate flow may reveal an insufficient fall or partial blockage.

Common causes

Blockage, incorrect fall, failed connection or pump

Dust and biological contamination can restrict the drain or tray outlet. In other cases, the pipe lacks sufficient fall, a connection has separated or the condensate pump cannot remove water. Each cause requires a different remedy.

Where the route is concealed, the fault may not be directly behind the visible leak. We inspect accessible sections and establish how the system was originally constructed before opening finishes.

Icing

Ice on the evaporator can release water after shutdown

Restricted airflow, dirty filters, a fan issue or a refrigerant-circuit fault can cause the evaporator to ice. When it melts, a large volume reaches the drain tray quickly and can overflow or expose limited drainage capacity.

Visible ice is not a reason to continue running the system at a lower setting. Switch it off and arrange diagnostics because cleaning the drain alone will not address the cause of icing.

After repair

Check the complete accessible drainage route

After drainage or connection work, we confirm that water travels in the intended direction without appearing at the unit, trunking or wall. Where a pump is present, its operation and accessible connections form part of the check.

Water-damaged decoration or construction may need separate drying or building work beyond the air-conditioner repair. We explain equipment and drainage findings without making unsupported claims about concealed building damage.

Information for diagnostics

What to photograph and describe

If safe, photograph where water appears, the indoor unit, trunking and model label. State how long the equipment runs before leaking, whether ice is visible and whether water continues after shutdown.

Do not open electrical compartments or force pressure through the drain. Incorrect intervention can push debris deeper or cause more damage. A safe initial description helps select the correct diagnostic approach.

After a leak

Protect the room and prepare for inspection

Switch the unit off and protect furniture, flooring and electrical devices below it. If water has reached electrical connections, do not touch wet components and isolate the relevant circuit only if this can be done safely. Collect visible water without opening the casing.

Photograph where water first appeared and note the operating time. Mention whether leakage continued after shutdown, whether ice was present and where condensate normally exits outside. These observations guide the drainage and operating checks.

After repair, observe the indoor unit, trunking and wall finish. Previously trapped moisture can emerge later, so it is important to distinguish a new leak from retained water. Building materials may require separate drying or inspection.

Work process

From request to agreed work

Before starting, we confirm the solution, cost and suitable timing.

  1. 01

    Switch off and document

Protect the property and, if safe, photograph the leak position and equipment model.

  2. 02

    We trace the condensate path

We assess contamination, pipework, pump operation, icing and other possible faults.

  3. 03

    Repair the agreed cause

We explain the scope and check accessible condensate drainage after completing the work.

Frequently asked questions

Answers before you submit

If your circumstances differ, describe them in the request and we will clarify the information needed.

Can I continue using a leaking air conditioner?

It is not recommended. Switch it off, particularly where water threatens electrical equipment, walls, floors or furniture, and request an inspection.

Is cleaning the drain pipe always enough?

No. A blockage is one cause, but the pipe fall, connections, condensate pump, icing or another technical fault may be responsible.

Preparing your request

Before diagnostics, retain the error code, complete model number and a short timeline: when the symptom began, which mode reveals it and whether the equipment has been repaired before. Do not open the casing, refrigerant circuit or electrical connections. Safe observations help us prepare, but the cause and repair scope can only be confirmed after a technical assessment.
